It is potent, so it is used sparingly to add depth to both sweet dishes like cakes, pies, and custards, and savoury dishes such as sauces, pasta, and vegetable dishes. Freshly grated nutmeg offers the most intense flavour and is often added at the end of cooking or as a finishing touch.
