Recently we’ve seen an increase in the demand for Sumac and customers wanting to know more about this interesting spice.

Sumac is made from ground berries of the wild sumac flower. Sumac is a tangy spice with a zesty, lemon-like flavour that is ideally used as a sprinkle.

Sumac is known for its sharp acidic taste, with an earthy, woody aroma. It can be used in dishes that calls for citrus zest.

Sumac is primarily used as a sprinkle – simply garnish over fresh greens, cucumber or halloumi and other dairies. It can also be used as a rub on red meats or vegetables. It is also an ingredient in Za’atar (a middle-eastern spice blend).

Sumac blends well with Coriander, Cardamom, Cumin, Aniseed, All Spice and Cinnamon amongst other spices.

Sumac has a deep purple-reddish tone and has a coarse texture. Like other spices, sumac should be kept in a closed container at room temperature.

Sumac is available in-store at Spice City.

Happy cooking!
